Last night it was demanded that I tidy up the spare bedroom cupboard in which I house those of my books that won't fit in the bookshelves. I admit it gets a bit of a mess and what starts as tidy piles soon finishes as untidy lumps as I root through to find what I want.

Now I'm not the only person in the household who uses this cupboard. Someone else (who shall be nameless!) also uses it to store cushions that she has got tired off and has replaced (together with those she replaced before those and even those she replaced before those) it looks like a haberdashery in there.

Now, at the bottom of this pile of cushionic discards I found a yellow plastic bag (they were free in those days!) and in the bag five large packs of Dutch Crocus corms bought late last August. They were meant to be planted out in a bed in which I had intended to take out two substantial shrubs (one dead and t'other expiring gradually).

The weather being what it has been for months I never did get to take out the shrubs and on a quiet day for a change a couple of weeks ago I spent two hours finding out that my shrub removal days were now past. To cut a long story short the elderly couple across the road have a gardener who comes once a fortnight for a couple of hours and on his last visit I showed him the shrubs, he said a tenner, I said done. And it was done. Then I thought about the Crocuses!

Now I'm getting to it. Should I take a risk and plant out about 120 corms which have been sprouting for some time, or should I dump them? If I dump them you realise that my eyes will fill with tears at the thought of the money I've wasted but the good point will be I can argue that we can't afford anymore cushions.

I think you should plant them David. They'll look amazing even if late and let's face it, none of us likes to see a grown man cry.

That's what I think, too - we'd hate to see those bright eyes filled with tears
So go ahead and plant'em.
Especially if it will help feed the wildlife!

Ian, I'm minded to think that you might be a bachelor, I know few men who could get away with that without some aggro?
