Iris as pigment

I visited an enthusiastic iris grower south of San Francisco, and
watched as she painted with crushed petals.

Hi Diane
I remember doing something like this (no way near as artistically!) when I was 16 and visiting relatives in India. I remember also using iris pigment when I was back in Australia. I found a few of the small pictures ages later and the stain was still visible. I wonder if your artist gives out info about doing this sort of art?
cheers

There is a passing reference to using iris for dyeing in Basho's well-known "Narrow Road to the Deep North." He makes particular reference to receiving a gift of sandals so dyed and his feet in consequence looking like iris flowers.

An aquaintance in South Australia India Flint has brought out a new book on dyes from plants. She is an amazing lady with her artworks, the clothing she makes and dyes are especially awe inspiring.
Here is the link to her website: http://www.indiaflint.com/page10.htm
