Geranium 'Stadt Bern'
« on: February 20, 2018, 12:23:31 PM »
Hello,
Years ago my late father had a big blue Chinese china pot and grew Geranium 'Stadt Bern' in it. He kept the pot in a conservatory over winter and each year they were flowering profusely, standing some 1.5m tall.
I have looked around to find this selection, and found it 15 years ago by chance  in Bicton Park's collection in Budleigh Salterton, send them an inquiry but never got an answer, and then forgot all about it. Looking at the empty blue pot today, I thought I'd give it a try with the resource of the forum!
Does anyone grow it / knows where I could get a cutting?
Bart

Hello Bart ,

maybe I can help you ...
I grow since many years a Pelargonium ( a gift from a cacti friend ) - he told me it is a Pelargonium species .

Before some weeks I have sent pics of this plant to a german friend - she works on a Institute for plant breeding
They grow there a lot pelargonium ...so she ask the boss what my plant could be ..the quick answer was :
Pelargonium x Friesdorf

Last week I have ask a friend from this Forum if he knows anything about this cross ...
Some times later he send me the answer :
The breeder was Max Löbner vom B.G.Bonn ( 1927 ) - and the area for breeding was called Friesdorf :
http://www.botgart.uni-bonn.de/o_uns/figure/loebner.php

I have tried to look in the plant list of this Botanical Garden ...and there is now listet only :
Pelargonium x zonale "Stadt Bern"

So it seems for me that the plant who former called "Friesdorf" is now "Stadt Bern"
I'm not sure if I'm 100% correct ...

I enclose some pictures from my plant :

Do you have maybe pictures from your plant ?

Thank you all, I've ordered some! (and a few other things as well). Just goes to show how fashions change and come back. When I looked 15 years ago it didn't show any results. To be honest I did not even try googleing it before I posted this query, but indeed it is easy to find.

Hans, I have a printed photo in a cardboard box somewhere, and from memory the plant looks similar. The stocky vigour is the same, but I am no expert in pelargoniums, as far as I know there may be a whole host of them that look similar. Nice plant you have. Enjoy its flowers when the time comes

Thanks

Bart

I have grown Stadt Bern for a few years now and it is always much admired. I bought it from Fibrex as was suggested by another forum member.
