'Zavelsteiner Krokusblüte' Crocus neglectus
« on: March 14, 2017, 09:22:48 PM »
Last Sunday I visited the first time Bad-Teinach Zavelstein in the black forest for its wild crocus meadows.
It was the first sunny, no clouds weekend. Mild 14°C Celsius attracted many visitors.

To my regret the whole town Zavelstein was crowded, wild car parking off the roads and too many 'nature friends' with free running dogs, families with kids and strollers, groups of pensioners with walking sticks trampled on and rolled over many tender crocus flowers.. >:( :'( :-X

For all who want to read in German language more about the spectacle: http://www.teinachtal.de/de/unsere-heimat/krokusbluete/zavelsteiner-wildkrokusbluete/ The season will be soon on its peak and one needs to hurry if you want to see it.

Nevertheless the negative impressions at the beginning I'm pleased to show a few shots. I found some nice thumbnails of some of the dutch crocus cultivars. Certainly crocus neglectus is one of the parents or ancestor of the dutch breedings.

In the town are a few fenced gardens with real mass flowering under old fruit-trees and in combination with bee hives nearby.

C. neglectus shows a great variability. Many pale colored, but also striped and those with dark tips are found.
One can easy recognize great resemblance to dutch cultivars like 'King of the striped', 'Pallas', 'Jeanne de Arc', 'Little Dorrit', 'Grand Maitre' ect.

How lovely  that you still managed to picture so many  pretty Crocus, Armin.  I am always surprised at the way people will run roughshod over flowers, or allow their dogs and children to do that.  :'(

That happens when it becomes 'mass tourism'. You can't control them.  :(
