Unknown Lamiaceae (edit: plantaginaceae?) cutting
« on: April 09, 2017, 11:53:56 PM »
I visited a friend at a private garden he was working in as a gardener and he gave me this cutting from a shrub I commented on. He didn't tell me what it was called and I've neglected it and haven't thought much about it until now. Does anyone recognise it?

It is possible; if the foliage is aromatic then would be worth looking after an Elsholtzia species. I am only familiar with E. stauntonii (which is different) but there are many others.

One of the first things I did was crush a leave and sniff.. no essential oil. Just a planty green smell. I doubt it's Lamiaceae. The flower is more like Veronica, without labiatae 'lips'.

You're right Jamus, i zoomed in as much as possible, not a Lamiaceae.
Very unfamiliar, may be something native there. Please post when you find the name.

Could it be a kind of Clethra?

Over on facebook David Kennedy identified this for me as Leucosceptrum stellipilum (Lamiaceae). A woodlander from Japan which is barely hardy (heat hardy) enough for my garden.

Here is a better photo showing the inflorescence.

Thanks for the update - not a plant I've heard of before. Is the flower scented?
