Iridaceae id please
« on: October 26, 2017, 08:39:21 PM »
This is a bit of a long shot but here goes...........

I have a spot where I chuck pots of ungerminated seed. Last year what I assumed to be an Iris seedling popped up (an Iris foetidissima was in the spot before I cleared it) so I potted it up and this spring I planted it out the front of my brothers house. It is clearly not I.foetidissima or any of the other Iris that I have.

A couple of photos...............

The second photo doesn't show it very well but low down the stem is almost circular as it breaks the soil. If you 'pinch' it and run your fingers up it is definately coming into bloom so it may be a winter bloomer. The house bricks give some sense of scale so at a guess I'd say the tallest leaves stand at about 40cm. The soil is pretty hard baked clay but I can say with some authority that when I planted it it wasn't a bulbous species.

I've grown a few members of the family from seed and it is not ringing any bells. I've also failed with a few more Iridaceae.

I know that it's a big ask but I am wondering whether it's a species that I ought to consider lifting.

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated!

As Flickr was playing up I had to use my Google Photos account. So for those who cannot see them (it works fine on Firefox and Chrome) here are the photos.............

Fermi has come up with Hesperantha coccinea which I think may well be on the money.

Thanks!
