RHS People Awards
These awards celebrate individuals who have made outstanding contributions to horticulture and gardening
The Victoria Medal of Honour
Established in 1897, the Victoria Medal of Honour (VMH) may be awarded to British horticulturists deserving of special honour by the Society and is awarded for life. Only 63 medals may be held at any one time, in recognition of the duration in years of Queen Victoria’s reign.
In 2018 the VMH was awarded to RHS Ambassador Carol Klein, Peter Catt and Charles Williams.Associate of Honour
Established in 1930, the Associate of Honour is awarded to persons of British nationality who have rendered distinguished service to the practice of horticulture either as employers, or employees during the course of their working career. The number of Associates of Honour may not exceed 100 at any one time.
In 2018 the Associate of Honour was awarded to David Knott of RBGE The Veitch Memorial Medal
The Veitch Memorial Medal is awarded annually to persons of any nationality who have made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of the science and practice of horticulture.
In 2018 the Veitch Memorial Medal was awarded to Dr Rosemary Collier, Gerald Edwards, Michael Hudson and Dr Douglas Needham.
The Harlow Carr Medal
The Harlow Carr Medal is conferred on persons who have made a significant contribution to horticulture in the North of England, through length of service, commitment to projects or capabilities, combined with reliability and professionalism.
In 2018 the Harlow Carr Medal was awarded to Martin Fish and Sue France.
Master of Horticulture (RHS)Designed for professional horticulturists who wish to grow their careers, the RHS Master of Horticulture is the Society’s most prestigious professional horticultural qualification. It is of degree level, and holders of the award may use the designation MHort (RHS) after their name.
In 2018 the Master of Horticulture was awarded to Jay Ashworth, Neil Bebbington, Andrea Benson, Alex Brenton, Christine Clemson, Robin Cure, Stephen Dunn, Stuart Eldergill, David Hand, Patrick Hayes, Emma Hill, Ed Ikin, Mei Leng Lim, Stephen Massam, James O’Connell, Ashley Parkinson, Zachary Rafferty, Leonie Raymont, Hazel Robinson, Janna Schreier, Andrew Stanley, Matthew Stowe, Ian Tocher, Holly Vincent, Katharine Watkins and Dinesh Yamana Gedara.________________________________________

The following RHS Awards recognise horticultural excellence
E H Trophy
Provided from a fund bequeathed in 1961 by the late W J M Hawkey in memory of his grandmother, Mrs Elizabeth; his mother, Mrs Ellen; and his wife Mrs Emma Hawkey. This award is offered for the best exhibit of cut flowers shown to the Society during the year.
In 2018 the E H Trophy was awarded to Bloms Bulbs for their exhibit of cut tulips at RHS Malvern Spring Festival 2017.
Stanley Lord Bowl
Provided in 1998 by the Gardeners’ Royal Benevolent Society (now Perennial), on loan from the Worshipful Company of Gardeners, this trophy is awarded for the best exhibit of fruit shown to the Society during the year at any of its Shows.
In 2018 the Stanley Lord Bowl was awarded to R V Roger Ltd for their exhibit of orchard fruit at the Malvern Autumn Show 2017.
Westonbirt Orchid Medal
Provided from a fund presented in 1960 by Mr H G Alexander in commemoration of the collection of orchids made at Westonbirt. The Westonbirt Orchid Medal is awarded annually to an individual for any scientific, literary, or any other outstanding personal achievement in connection with orchids.
In 2018 the Westonbirt Medal was awarded to Isobyl la Croix.
George Moore Medal
Instituted in 1926 and presented by the late G F Moore, the medal is awarded to the exhibitor of the best cultivar of any orchid hybrid grex seen by the RHS Orchid Committee during the year.
In 2018 the George Moore Medal was awarded to the Eric Young Orchid Foundation for Oncidium La Marevel ‘Clos Fondain’.

Peter Barr Memorial Cup
Presented in 1912 by the Trustees of the Peter Barr Memorial Fund in commemoration of Mr Peter Barr. The cup is awarded annually on the recommendation of the RHS Bulb Committee to someone who, in the Committee’s opinion, has achieved good work of some kind in connection with daffodils.
In 2018 the Peter Barr Memorial Cup was awarded to Professor Harold Koopowitz.________________________________________
Anthony Huxley Trophy
Instituted in 1994 in commemoration of Anthony Huxley, a Vice-President of the Society and Chairman of the former Floral ‘C’ Committee. This award is presented annually to the best group exhibit of plants normally grown for decorative effect in a protected environment including greenhouses, conservatories or dwelling houses, at a show judged by the RHS Tender Ornamental Plant Committee, or by a panel from, or including members of, that Committee during the year.
In 2018 the Anthony Huxley Trophy was awarded to Hampshire Carnivorous Plants for their exhibit of Sarracenia species and hybrids at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017.

RHS Orchid Trophy
The RHS Orchid Trophy is awarded to the exhibitor of the most finely grown orchid plant shown to the RHS Orchid Committee during the year.
In 2018 the RHS Orchid Trophy was awarded to the Eric Young Orchid Foundation for Cymbidium Putana ‘Clos Paumelle’.

Reginald Cory Memorial Cup
With a view to encouraging the production of new hybrids of garden origin, this cup is awarded to a raiser whose hybridisation programme has resulted in the recent introduction and availability of new hybrids of merit. The award is not limited by plant hardiness or to the breeding of a particular genus or species.
In 2018 the Reginald Cory Memorial Cup was awarded to Aad Verwer and Kees Verwer for their work with Dahlia.

Colin Spires Herb Trophy
Instituted in 2004, the Colin Spires Herb Trophy is awarded for the best exhibit of medicinal and/or culinary herbs staged during the year at one of the Society’s Shows.
In 2018 the Colin Spires Herb Trophy was awarded to Downderry Nursery for their exhibit of lavender at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2017.

Farrer Trophy
Instituted in 1959 in commemoration of Reginald Farrer, plant collector and authority on alpine plants, this trophy is awarded for the best exhibit of plants suitable for the rock garden or alpine house staged during the year at one of the Society’s Shows.
In 2018 the Farrer Trophy was awarded to Kevock Garden Plants for their exhibit of alpine, bog and woodland plants at RHS Chatsworth Flower Show 2017.________________________________________
Gordon-Lennox Trophy
First presented by Lady Algernon Gordon-Lennox in 1913, this trophy is awarded for the best exhibit of vegetables staged during the year at one of the Society’s Shows.
In 2018 the Gordon-Lennox Trophy was awarded to Medwyn’s of Anglesey for their exhibit of vegetables at the Malvern Autumn Show 2017.

Eric Young Orchid Trophy
First given in 2013, this trophy is awarded to the exhibitor of the most meritorious group of orchids staged at any RHS Show during the year.
In 2018 the Eric Young Orchid Trophy was awarded to the Eric Young Orchid Foundation for their exhibit of orchids from the Foundation’s breeding programme at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017.

Williams Memorial Medal
Instituted in 1896 by the Trustees of the Williams Memorial Fund in commemoration of B S Williams, the medal is awarded for a group of plants and/or cut blooms of one genus (fruit and vegetables excepted) which shows excellence in cultivation, staged at one of the Society’s Shows during the year.
In 2018 the Williams Memorial Medal was awarded to Hampshire Carnivorous Plants for their exhibit of Sarracenia species and hybrids at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017.

Mrs F E Rivis Prize
Provided from a fund presented in 1960 by Miss A K Hincks in commemoration of her sister, Mrs F E Rivis, with a view to encouraging excellence in cultivation. This prize is awarded to the gardener or other employee responsible for the cultivation of the exhibit for which the Williams Memorial Medal is awarded.
In 2018 the Mrs F E Rivis Prize was awarded to Matthew Soper.

Holford Medal
Presented by the Executors of the late Sir George Holford in 1928, the Holford Medal is awarded for the best exhibit of plants and/or flowers staged during the year by an amateur or group of amateurs at one of the Society’s Shows.
In 2018 the Holford Medal was awarded to the National Sweet Pea Society for their exhibit of sweet peas and Lathryus species at RHS Malvern Spring Festival 2017.

Wigan Cup
Presented by the late Mr A L Wigan in 1911, the Wigan Cup is awarded for the best exhibit shown to the Society during the year by a Local Authority.
In 2018 the Wigan Cup was awarded to Birmingham City Council for their exhibit ‘Celebrating the work of Rowland Emett’ at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017.

Best Lindley Exhibit
The Best Lindley Exhibit award is awarded for the best Lindley exhibit displayed at one of the Society’s shows for that year. Lindley exhibits are floral exhibits, with an added educational information component to the display.
In 2018 the Best Lindley Exhibit was awarded to Hoyland Plant Centre for their exhibit of Agapanthus, × Amarine and Nerine at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017.

Lawrence Medal
Instituted in 1906 to celebrate Sir Trevor Lawrence’s 21-year tenure of office as President of the Society, the Lawrence Medal is awarded annually for the best exhibit shown to the Society during the year.
Nominees included Hampshire Carnivorous Plants, Holden Clough Nursery, Medwyn’s of Anglesey, Penberth Plants, Pheasant Acre Plants, R. & A. Scamp Quality Daffodils and Vacherot & Lecoufle.In 2018 the winner of the Lawrence Medal was announced during the ceremony – Penberth Plants.
