Two unknowns, help needed please.
« on: June 09, 2018, 03:48:18 PM »
We went to Abbey Wood garden this week and found 2 plants which taxed our knowledge.  Hope you can help.

The first was a shrub, about 4 feet tall in a border.

The second a tree which we thought at first was a fancy oak until we saw the fruits which are more like Beech basts.

The shrub is likely one of the new hybrids of Sinoclaycanthus chinensis x Calycanthus floridus.

Could the tree be Fagus syvatica f. laciniata?  Hard to tell from the photos.

Thanks John for the shrub id. I've never heard of that one.

John and Fleur thank you both for your suggestions. I have looked at examples of both but I think it will just remain Fagus.
