There's Still Time to Register
for the NARGS Study Weekend
Rooted in Diversity:  May 3-5, 2019
Frazer, Pennsylvania

Here are the latest UPDATES on Open Gardens & Plant Sales at the Study Weekend sponsored by the NARGS Delaware Valley Chapter. We hope you will register soon if you haven't already.
In addition to our excellent speaker line up and the bus tours to the gardens featured on our web site, www.dvcnargs.org/studyweekend.html, we are pleased to announce this great line up of open gardens for Registrants to visit on their own Friday and Sunday. The first week of May will be bursting with gorgeous blooms. You won’t want to miss these!

Gardens open on FRIDAY, May 3 include:

David Culp’s Brandywine Cottage, Downingtown. This noted author, designer and nurseryman’s gardens are featured in books, garden magazines and a Martha Stewart video. The gorgeous grounds include a stunning “ruin garden” with many troughs and a fabulous rock wall.

The Cresson Garden at Hedgleigh Spring, Swarthmore. A family garden begun over 100 years ago, this large lot is packed with plants, many rare and unusual, cultivated by the incredibly knowledgeable Charles Cresson. Delightful planters, water features, garden accents and an incredible collection of plants dazzle.

Scott Arboretum, Swarthmore. This is a fantastic collection of trees and shrubs, especially magnolias and tree peonies (which should be in bloom), and features great perennial and bulb collections, too.

Gardens open on SUNDAY, May 5 include:

Janet Novak’s Garden, Philadelphia. This is a rock gardening connoisseur’s delight with nearly 850 species and varieties of plants. This small urban garden has many unusual plants and features, including a dry-laid stone wall bursting with rock-garden plants, limestone barrens and container bog gardens.

Laura Axel’s Garden, Wyndmoor. The garden begins in the driveway with a small rockery with four season interest serving as a buffer. Out front, curvaceous mixed use borders please the eyes. In back, a flower bed leads to winding paths to more gardens, which feature a variety of plant collections and whimsical touches.

Carol Verhake’s Garden, Berwyn. This landscape professional’s garden features big boulders and pleasing color combinations of perennials and other plants woven  into graceful borders.

Gwynne Ormsby’s Garden, West Chester. In this “pocket vest”urban garden cultivated mainly from seed, you can expect to see lots of minor bulbs, phlox and columbines in bloom amidst abundant vegetables. (Extra bonus: very close to a great French bakery, restaurants, and Eclat chocolates, beloved by the late Anthony Bourdain.)

Sharee Solow’s Garden, Elkins Park. Sharee is a landscape designer and frequent lecturer whose urban, mostly shade, garden is packed with plants.  Features include a rock garden, a bonsai collection, and a pond with a special highlight on pitcher plants.

Plant Sale highlights will include: Cyclamen, alpine Primroses, Arisaema, bog plants, rock garden plants and shrubs. We have a great line up of vendors, including our own Delaware Valley Chapter, renowned for their Plant Sales featuring rare and desirable rock garden treasures.

We look forward to seeing you all in May! Please register by March 1, 2019 via www.dvcnargs.org/studyweekend.html. Our meeting location in Frazer, PA is about 25 miles west of Philadelphia. Consider allowing extra time to visit some of the must see nearby gardens like Chanticleer, Winterthur, Longwood, or our many arboreta in America’s Garden Capital. Details are  available at americasgardencapital.org. There may be no better time of year to visit!
Margaret Young in Aberdeen, North East Scotland Zone 7 -ish!
