sowing advices searched for Begonia

Hi all ,

I have ordered before few days seeds of Begonia
Is here maybe anybody who has grown succsessful Begonia from seed ?
Which substrat ?
Which time ( now or in spring ) ?
Which temperatur ?
I know Begonia needs ligth for germination ...so not cover with soil

I'm grateful for any advices

I have tried Begonia boliviensis seed from a seed ex without success, so I am interested, too.

I asked Alan Elliott for  his  help because  he  has  worked with the folk of the  begonia collections  in RBGE  and  Glasgow and  he said .... "  Seeds need humidity and light so surface sow, don't cover the seed with compost. The need to be misted regularly or put them in a sealed ziplock bag or in propagator if you have one to keep the humidity up.

They also seem to germinate better with their mates so plenty seed in a pot Its the happy medium thing of too many and it become impossible to tease them apart or not enough and they don't germinate very well.

Sterile seed mix is needed too as they might get swamped by other stuff if they are slow to germinate.

And as with all plants, good seed and luck....  "

 I forgot to ask about the  substrate    so waiting to  hear  about that!

Lisa at https://www.growildnursery.co.uk/ seems to have lots of success with them from seed. She must be rather busy packing plants at the moment as they just put their new plant list online, but you could try emailing to ask. They use peat free compost, but I suspect any good, (finely divided) seed compost would work.

We will, they're all online now - and I think most should prove hardy for you. We won't open for orders until everything has arrived here, we're still waiting for some lily seeds from Yunnan and Hubei, and possibly some fairly hardy gesneriads from Hunan.

My own experience sowing Begonia is limited to B. grandis evansiana - and I only got some 6 plants from a lawn of seedlings. Sterile compost and a plastic bag or propagator is sound advice, moss grows faster than Begonia.
