December 2019 in Northern Hemisphere
« on: December 14, 2019, 01:47:48 PM »
The first two weeks of December have been relatively warm here in Finland after colder period on late November. It's been some degrees above freezing almost all month and all the frost in the ground has melted. First noses of snowdrops are showing above ground, as is Adonis amurensis. Helleboruses have started to show their buds, which is not so good, because winter is still bound to come in January at the latest.
Helleborus niger in the first picture, in the second first time flowering 'Early Purple' from seeds from Nicole some years ago. I hope it still survives winter even though the flower is so advanced now.
In the third picture Helleborus multifidus buds (I covered them with dry oak leafs after taking the picture) and in the fourth picture the died foliage of Helleborus multifidus which always dies down in the autumn, and to it's left evergreen  Epimedium 'Frohnleiten'.
In the last picture foliage of two different kinds in H.x hybridus, the top one has quite nice dissected foliage and primrose flowers.

A few weeks ago, this Townsendia condensata (outdoors) developed an approach to flowering. Now it was stopped in its development by the upcoming winter. I am curious whether it will survive the winter at this stage and present the final result in spring. 🤞

Hepatica nobilis before Christmas is not common to see here but Transylvanica may be in bloom from end November beginning of December

It is pretty with the white and ice Arnold even if not always requested

We sometimes get white trees from frost but seldom from ice pretty and in February the trees are ready for it
The common campanula is in flower here still, even if it is only the last ones
The majority is already going dormant
A lot of bulbs are poking up due to fairly warm weather
Potting in Lund in Southern Sweden and Coimbra in the middle of Portugal as well as a hill side in central Hungary

Fruits and flowers together, always such a bonus from any species.

End of year finds SW Ontario without snow (again), rain and crazy temperatures swings. But there is always something to enjoy regardless of the weather.
Dianthus petraeus and Asarum europaeum-Hepatica acutiloba in the garden

Gaultheria procumbens, Sorghastrum nutans (Indian grass) and Anemone virginiana, wild.

It is the same here: no snow and yesterday it was +5C, now around zero. Many plants are already thinking of spring. :)
