New snowdrop - sale for health organisations December 2020
« on: December 04, 2020, 06:10:44 PM »
Ian Christie  has  named  a  new  snowdrop- and  plans  to sell the  first  two bulbs  on Ebay, the  proceeds  to go to local health service  organisations.

Galanthus plicatus ‘The Lady with the Lamp’

Several years observing the colony of Galanthus plicatus at Brechin Castle have resulted in several interesting named clones the most recent is the above. Ian Christie has always searched for bulbs which have perfect leaves and large flower combinations -  a few have been selected over the years, four years ago Ian found a very special clump 3 or 4 flowering bulbs with large pristine white flowers and broad shiny green leaves these bulbs were brought to Ian’s  garden for further observations.

The bulbs were pot grown so Ian could move them around for comparison. Last year when the clump now established flowered Ian’s wife Ann thought they looked like a lantern when closed: wonderful textured petals held high on sturdy stems above the broad shiny green leaf on opening flowers show a stunning full inner green mark, slightly striped, which runs down to the sinus.  The combination of both leaves and flowers create one of the most beautiful snowdrops they had found. Ann’s  comparison of the  flower  to a  lantern gave  rise  to the  name for  this  lovely  snowdrop.
2019 was the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale who was known as The Lady with the Lamp when she tended wounded soldiers. We have seen outstanding service and dedication from nurses during this Corona pandemic and  Ian Christie wishes to donate money from a sale of the bulbs which were named in her honour to a Health service charity.
Ian  plans to sell 2 bulbs only this year:   proceeds will be donated to local health service organizations.

This snowdrop will be for sale on Ebay  on Thur. 10  December at 8pm.  Starting soon I think !

Ian Christie’s ebay seller name  is  sgtmajor47
