Pleione 2021

Almost all my Pleione had "watermarks" on the flowers, and were deported to a frame at the far end of the garden where they have been neglected for several years with only at thin layer of oak leaves as winter protection. Some have thrived, mainly the hybrids formosana x chunii and Jorullo gx 'Harlequin'.

On a visit to Logan gardens today, I saw an unusual method,(to me), of growing Pleiones  There was a small group of Pleione formosanum growing in a part of a fern trunk and looking very healthy. The log was sitting in shade next to a grove of old camellias,probably never getting full sunlight  There are also some recently introduce epiphatic Rhododendrons recently collected from the mountains in Vietnam growing in the same medium.  These have been outside for two years and again looking extremely healthy.  It will be interesting to see them flowering

Pleione x Confirmation leaves have coloured up nicely this year. unfortunately its flowering at the same time and the flowers are being obscured.
I really will have to repot this year to give them more space.

Frustrating about the flowers being  rather covered up, Graham  - but I've never seen such lovely colour on pleione leaves.  Lovely!

In previous years Maggi they have shown some reddening but this is the best year so far.
Also in previous years they have flowered after the leaves have fallen.

One week on and all is revealed, (well nearly).
The leaves have started to fall to reveal a mass of flowers.
The scent in this afternoons sun was really lovely.

I have split up the above pot of Pleione x Confirmation and have up to 50 for sale.
They could have done with re-potting a little earlier as there are new roots appearing.
However, I have been very careful and they should be OK. You will need to be careful when potting on.
Most have more then one new shoot.
