Oxalis?
«

On Saturday I bought three pots of a little Oxalis (at only 50p per pot I couldn't resist!). The leaves are a very dark coppery red/maroon colour of a shape that reminds me of the Greek letter Delta (not that I'm a Greek scholar you understand!) and the little flower is white flushed with pink. To wet to go and take a picture. Can anyone 'christen' it please and is it likely to be a 'thug'?

I like them anyway David !
The foliage is of an unmatched colour in the Rock garden - really purple at the beginning of the season.

Yes it has stopped raining Chris, just when thoughts turn to 'what's for tea?' and here's a picture taken in the kitchen.
Looks very much like yours Jim.

It surely is David and as I wrote earlier on, the purple colour of the foliage is far more pronouced at the beginning of the season ! Good bargain once again !

Yes, it is
Oxalis triangularis
. Here it loses its leaves in late summer and starts off again late winter. Quite hardy in my climate at least but I wouldn't be letting it loose in the garden.
Having said that, it makes a stunning pot plant if you can grow it in maximum light to intensify the dark colouring. The whole leaves (as distinct from leaflets) can grow to 6 or 7cms across, and it anyone wants to give it a cultivar name, it should be 'Stealth Bomber' or 'D'Arth Vader.'

In my climate at least, too much sun results in all purple leaves (no pink), too little and they go a bit greenish. Just right (morning sun for me) and the pink chevrons on the leaves are striking. Lovely pale white/pinkish flowers that are set off by and set off the lovely leaves.

Since I see this species as having a rather sinister appearance, I remove the flowers. They're insipid and just not up to the leaf quality - in my opinion
