I'm glad someone took pictures - I took my camera but never had the chance to get it out of my bag. I know some other local group members took pictures, I'll ask at our meeting this evening whether one or two couldn't make their way to the forum.

Pardon my ignorance but was the Farrer medal not given due to lack of good plants?
I thik that there were some nice cyclamen there that would do well but I am far from being a judge, but still judging what I see.
Thanks for the great photos and the time travel into 2009
Kind regards

The standard the judges try to keep up requires plants to be exceptionally well grown and flowered to win the Farrer or the Forrest medal. On this occasion I did comment before judging started that I didn't think a Farrer would be awarded (sits back feeling smug
). The Cyclamen in question was very good but not as good as a number seen in recent years and was not, indeed, as good as one at Loughborough the previous week which did not win, being beaten by an excellent pot of Crocus. I'll post a picture shortly to let you make up your own minds. I think the marking on the flowers was probably the deciding factor

Here's the picture, a close up of the Cyclamen flowers with what looks like weather damage.

Now that I've got the bit between my teeth here are a few more pictures of the Newcastle Show. No apologies for some repetition, you can't see enough of good plants.
A fungus spotted on the grass verge outside the hall while the judges were doing their thing.
A close up of Hyacinthoides lingulata (now I might have given a Farrer to this one)
Crocus pulchellus
A wonderfully coloured form of Cyclamen hederifolium
Bessera elegans

Another small batch
Rosularia sempervivum glaucophylla
Cyclamen africanum
Gentiana Lucerna (not my cup of tea, a double Gentian, but you may like it)
Another picture of the very fine Gentiana sino-ornata which won the best Gentian trophy
and finally...........this week's caption competition

Martin R Thanks for the detail of the cyclamen. I now understand why it did not get the Farrer.
Also thanks for the other pictures.
Kind regards
