Question on cultivated Meconopsis paniculata & M. napaulensis
« on: November 19, 2008, 06:17:38 PM »
Hello All,

I was wondering if anyone growing M. paniculata has ever seen any colour variants of the stigma? Of course usually M. paniculata posesses a nice clearly purple stigma, but I have heard that this can vary to a significnat degree. Possibly someone might even have some pictures of this?

I am wondering also about the yellow cultivated form of M. napaulensis, which has both yellow flowers and stigmas. Has anyone ever consciously (or otherwise!) crossed this with M. paniculata, as I am curious to know whether the resulting progeny would retain purple or yellow stigmas.

They always say that M. napaulensis (of hort.) has hybridized countless times with M. paniculata over the decades, giving us what we have now today. But do the hybrids of the two species always end up with a yellow stigma?

I hope that someone may be able to shed some light on this enquiry!
Thanks  :)

Paul.

I assume we're talking about Meconopsis?

Good point, Carlo....even though  we are in the "MEC" pages, it doesn't hurt to be clear, so I have edited the name of this thread. ;D

Ah it's subconcious for me at this stage to take the shortcut in writing 'Meconopsis', I've probably shaved off days by now  :)

But thanks for the edit Maggi!
