Soldanella taxonomy
« on: March 28, 2009, 09:03:49 PM »
I thinkthis is the right place to post this question   :D
I found these two species of Soldanella in catalogues but I cannot find it in any official literature, does anybody know if they are species in their own right or if they are misnamed:
Soldanella cyanaster
Soldanella grandiflora

Thanks

Wim

Wim - I have the Soldanella key by Josef Niederle and can email you a copy if you are interested.

Hi John,

thanks for the offer.
I have that key too but there isn't any mention of Soldanella grandiflora or Soldanella cyanaster on it either and I was wondering if anyone here knew if these names are used for another species.

Wim, I saw the name S. cyanaster the first time med. 1990 in a Swiss nursery.
I think it was only used on the continent then.
I googled the following links for you:

http://webpub.byu.net/lbzhang/Soldanella_nomen.pdf
http://www.amjbot.org/cgi/content/full/88/12/2331

I see the name has changed in S. chrysosticta.

In the first link you will find about S. montana too.
Happy reading  ;)

Luit,

thanks for the search. They are some very interesting articles. (stupid of me not to google it first)
I had also mailed Mr. Niederle in the meantime and he sent me this link:

http://math.muni.cz/~niederle/solpage.html
 Now    https://is.muni.cz/www/niederle/dripatky/solpageIS.html

There seem to be some inconsistencies between the determination of Zhang/Kadereit and the determination of Niederle. But they both agree on the fact that S. cyanaster is the same as S chrysosticta. And according to Niederle S. grandiflora is probably a garden cultivar.
