I tried to report to the moderator but was told that i could not report myself because that is ridiculous. I just want to thank our moderators for the very nice picture of me which acompanies my postings. i am not sure whether this is to encourage me or not. But ENCOURAGED I AM!
The picture encapsulates my being!
Full of wind. Misty thinking. Fiery nature. Islands of brightness. and bowing my head in the presence of greatness.
 Here are more Meconopsis or should that be Meconopses?
I hasten to add that I did not grow any of these. They are pictures of the plants put up to the Joint Rock Garden Plant Committee at the meeting at the RBG in May 2006.

Meconopsis Maggie Sharp... is that OUR Maggie Sharp, so to speak, the one married to Davie and living in Lhanbryde?

Maggie Sharp is indeed our Maggie Sharp or one of them as we have TWO!

This one lives in Oban and gardens by the sea...literally.

Her garden was one of those open in 1993 when the SRGC visited Oban for the jubilee year.
It was full of treasures and was very well kept. It had an impossibly steep slope much of which was lawn [if lawn can be vertical]. Her husband Jock used to trim the grass.  The last time I met Maggie was at Jean Band's garden opening a few years back.

Hi Sandy, Maggie all, Firstly Meconopsis George Sherriff Group, 'Barney's Blue' I rescued this plant some 5 years ago from the great garden at Ascreavie home of the late George Sherriff. I thought it was so distinctive that I put the plant in for Joint Rock at RBGE when it was awarded an A.M. and has been recommended for an AGM it is named after the present owner of Ascreavie house Barney Barron a super fellow who has tried to save most of the plants which are left at Ascreavie. Secondly the Meconopsis 'Maggie Sharp' is named after the lady in Oban it is a memeber of The Infertile Blue Group and we believe it to be a hybrid with M. betonicifolia and quite a distinct pale blue. I coud go on about all the other Meconopsis but at this time I would rather wish our Senior statesman Sandy a very happy birthday. Ian Christie.

Thanks for telling me who Barney is. The name 'Barney's Blue' has a good ring to it. Now we all know what Barney looks like.
I remember visiting Arcreavie wite the SRGC group when Mrs Sherriff lived there. She was very hospitable and was keen to talk about the plants to a nvicelike me.

Wonderful pics of the blue Mecs.  Absolutely wonderful.  Here in Canberra they seem to be one of those mythical plants...... they rarely if ever survive.  I do have M. cambrica (yellow/orange of course, not blue) which I purchased recently and have heard it is a weed in some places.  Still giving it a go.  At least that way I'll have some Mecs growing here!!  Lesley sent me seed of M. grandis least year but unfortunately none ever germinated, so maybe my conditions here are just too hot in summer for them.

Hi Paul
my neice who is a doctor is in Melbourne just now.What she wrote about the hot weather and surfing probably means that Meconopsis would struggle. I don't find them eay in my garden [not because of heat but the heavy clay soil, which I do not dig deeply enough] and have cheated by admiring those grown by others. She sent a Chrismas card of Santa on the beach!
