Scottish Rockers and RHS members visit to Glendoick
« on: May 11, 2009, 07:13:47 PM »
Hi all, we had 32 visitors this morning who enjoyed a superb day in warm sunshine looking at the Glendoick Rhododendrons with Ken Cox then we had a very good lunch with good food and great company some people had come from Cheshire and Northern Ireland, and we saw masses of Rhododendrons, some pictures from the day,  cheers Ian the Christie kind.

Lesley, I think that rhodo is Rhododendron SEAVIEW SUNSET

It was a great day here in Aberdeen, too : we had six visitors from New Zealand....in two parties who only realised a little while ago, when they compared notes about their trips, that they were both coming here today.... and going on to Orkney. Talk about coincidence! We had great weather and the most delightful company of Marcelle and Pat Garden and Christine and Malacolm Garland, with their stunning daughter, Anna and her boyfriend Phil. Anna and Phil are living and working in the UK at present and are taking this chance to have a bit of a tour around.  The weather was about the best day we've had this Spring, I reckon: most appropriate ! 8)

I wondered if the yellow was x Hotei but it's a while since I had that so maybe the memory isn'tso reliable. I'll make an effort to find 'Seaview Sunset' if it's in NZ.

I know Marcelle and Pat and thought Marcelle was home from her overseas trip but perhaps she's off again. Lucky lady. She and Noelene (wives of brothers Pat and Eion) are well known and liked hereabouts, both great gardeners in sometimes harsh condition. They're also heavily involved with the NZ Frit Group.

I was about to say I didn't know the Garlands but of course I do, but know Christine as Chris. That's what threw me. Another fine plantswoman.

Hi, i am sorry but do not know what names are for Rhodos except the large yellow one which is Loch Lomond, the view with all the different ones is the seed raised trial beds where many peachy ones pinks etc are growing I am standing by when they dump the ones they dont like,  cheers Ian the Christie kind.

The big flowered blue-blotch has me stumped! I've emailed Ken to ask him!

Had quick response from Ken, who tells me it is a R. augustinii... it just has an unusual blotch  :o I'm surprised... the flower looks HUGE....I didn't even consider augustinii as a possibility! :-[
