Can anyone tell me the germination habit of Ranzania japonica...
Is the seed ephemeral?

try normal woodland method. Sow immediately and leave in the ground or keep first warm then cool then again warm.
Do NOT try to overwinter the plant in pots. All losses I have had or heard about was created that way.

Just sowed some fresh seeds of the species. What's about next years small seedlings - don't they survive in a pot neither?

Friends, since I believe "Razania" to be a species of scarab beetle, I assume we are speaking here of Ranzania japonica?  I have made corrections

Ranzania japonica hardiness zone is 4 to 8.

maybe need some protection as first year seedlings in a cold frame for those in colder zones.

Mine are doing fine in z8. Sown in pots under the protection of a maple. The autumn leaves have fallen onto the pots and are left for protection. Germination was easily with a 90% result. A warm/cold/warm period and the rest came up the next year.

I have never had any losses in the ground not even small seedlings and I have a fairly cold climate. I know of potted seedlings that perished in a climate warmer than mine. My only lost Ranzania was potted. I would strongly advice against keeping ALL seedlings in pots.

Thank you Göte - will try them outside - but previous to this I hope for germination according the English saying: Don't count chickens before they hatch!
