Blood fish and bone meal
« on: January 24, 2020, 12:08:20 PM »
Just back from my local Dobbies.  The only form of BFB they stock is granules.  A: I use more of it and B: it doesn’t mix into my compost mix as well.  Anyone know if this move is due to new regulation and whether I can still get the powder somewhere?

Don't  know  about  availability  of  powdered BFB, Christine - but  wonder  how  Poppy the  dog  reacts?  Some  find it  irresistable, even the  kind that  is  meant  not  to attract  dogs/wildlife.  :-\

I may get that Maggi, never thought of looking on Amazon!  If you look closely at the Westland container it says easy to use granules though, but the other seems ok.  I keep it well away from Poppy, she’d make herself sick eating it given a chance ....  only use it to mix in my potting mix, not direct on the garden, though I do like to putt a handful in the bottom of holes I dig to plant things.

Chris,
East Riding Horticulture stock Blood fish and bone meal in 25 kg bags, had mine delivered last week.  This is powdered form which I prefer.

I remember being told a few years ago that soil amendments for general UK sale were subject to new legislation/guidelines. I don’t have any details of that, except that it was to do with no longer making powdered materials available because of the risk of inhalation, and so pelleted would be the new normal.

I think I’ve got the powdered sort ordered now via Amazon.  It did occur to me that it’s probably H&S stuff that’s caused it, but the granular form is much harder to mix thoroughly into the mix.  Thanks everyone for your help...
