The correct name for dwarf London Pride
« on: July 24, 2009, 06:25:51 PM »
I managed to collect and (more importantly) clean seed of a dwarf London Pride for exchange, but the correct name of the plant eludes me. It is probably the cultivar 'Primuloides', dwarf with near-white flowers, but it's not clear if this is referable to S. × urbium or S. umbrosa.

Rodger,

I don't immediately know the plant to which you refer but have had a look at "Saxifrages" by Malcolm McGregor.

S. 'Primuloides'  is described as "may be the same as 'Walter Ingwersen' or 'Clarence Elliott'.

S. 'Walter Ingwersen' is described as "Small (about hald the size of London Pride) with pink flowers. does not appear to be distinct from 'Clarence Elliott'.

S. 'Gracilis' is "Like London Pride but rather smaller although not as small as 'Walter Ingwersen'

Other small plants described had pink flowers, so your plant might well be one of the above.

The 'correct' name for the large London Pride would appear to be Saxifraga x urbium. We have the smaller form (which I rescued from a roadside fly-tipping investigation many years ago) but I don't know a proper name for it. It is very common up here and I doubt that it is a named variety.

Is Saxifrage 'Winifred Bevington' a dwarf London Pride?
I have this one I think.
