Visit to UK : late March early April 2010 .... What shouldn't be missed?

I've had this message from an Australian Member who expects to visit the UK around this time.....

"I was wondering if you knew of anything of particular interest happening in and around Scotland or England in late March early April next year, I am hoping be over there then.
I would like to get to see a few things of interest  outwith the project in London which is my  reason for travelling over....... any gardens which
I really shouldn't miss, shows etc. .... ??"

It depends on what you like to see. If you like rhododendrons then this is the start of the season in Scotland.  The RBGE in Edinburgh is always worth a visit
Their outfield gardens at Benmore, Logan and Dawyck will becoming into full bloom - weather dependent.  Branklyn in Perth will also be starting to bloom as will Glenarn on the Clyde coast.  Again the flowering times depend on what kind of winter we will have experienced.  There can be a 3 week difference depending on this.

I worry that your correspondent doesn't grasp the distances involved, but how about:
Places always worth a visit: RHS Wisley,RBG Kew, Bedgebury Pinetum.
Seasonal Interest: a top time for Cornish Magnolias: Lanhydrock, Trewithen, Caerhays.
Best Landscape Gardens: Stourhead, Studley Royal, Stowe.
Best Formal Gardens: Levens Hall.
English Classics: Sissinghurst, Hidcote, Dixter, Kiftsgate.
Crazy Scottish: Drummond Castle, Pitmedden, Edzell.
......how many years does the person have?

And of course there will be a show somewhere in England/Scotland or even both!

A visit to the Northumberland show could be combined with a trip to Howick , Belsay & Cragside gardens? Probably a little early for the gardens to be at their best though.

  • A fact is a fact - even if it is an unusual fact
