Androsace bisulca var aurata
« on: May 17, 2010, 08:29:50 PM »
More of a confirmation needed I hope.

I bought this labeled as above but several persons who know about these things examined the plant before it flowered and told me it was wrongly labelled based upon hand-lens examination of the foliage. Consensus was it was likely to turn out to be A. robusta or similar. Now it has flowered and the flowers are the expected yellow for bisulca var aurata. Any Androsace experts like to comment please? I agree the foliage is not quite like pictures I've seen of bisulca but I don't know how variable this is?

I'm not sure, but for comparison, here is a picture from Southport Show on Saturday, showing John Richards' plant and notes.  I've just got a potful germinated from Holubec seed, so I'm hopeful, although I believe it is quite difficult to keep going.

Looks similar to me Diane, though mine has a more pronounced rosette perhaps?

I don't know either but I've also started it this year from Holubec.  (The seedlings, as they approach about 1/2 " diameter are compact, upward-cupping(?), hairy little rosettes, more similar to Darren's photo than to the looser ones in Diane's photo.  Would a photo of them be helpful?)
In the Holubec catalogue, he likens the foliage to A. villosa, if that is helpful.

I am a little late, I however send here my picture from 2008. Flowers were a little aborted but the species is the same. It died in the next winter.
