Are they hardy? Mine has very strong roots growing through the bottom of a 9cm square plastic pot.

Aha! The six thousand dollar question! Some of the little  species seem to be pretty tough.... don't think they appreciate being cold and wet, though. If you had a bulb bed in the bottom of a glass house where they could dig down but have glass protection that would be fine, I reckon.

I'm pulling mine out by the handful from my sand plunge. It's now very dry, at least the top 6". Flowering shoots keep popping up. The sterile shoots have withered.
