Is this Chaenorhinum origanifolium 'Blue Dream' ?
« on: February 10, 2011, 04:17:03 PM »
Hi Folks, I've been sent these photos.... is the ID corrrect, do you think?

Quote
Is this Chaenorhinum origanifolium 'Blue Dream' ? Best I can do with close up photos, flowers are no more than
5mm or 1/4" and seem to be only 3 petals of about equal size at top and
left/right sides and a much smaller petal facing down, leaves are bright
green,no visible hairs as some of the internet photos show, one even
mentioned purple colouration under the leaves but not on these. The
leaves are in pairs along stem with buds/flower stems forming in the
leaf axils.Hope this may help.Best wishes,Gordon

I'm inclined to think not that plant.

And if the words on the ruler are indicative of it being in Australia, it may unfortunately be a particularly weedy veronica which we have over here!

I had to look up Chaenorhinum origanifolium 'Blue Dream', but it is definitely not that.  Not even close in either flower appearance or particularly in growth habit.  The real plant should have flowers sitting above not amongst the foliage, furry foliage as far as I can tell, and proportionately much larger flowers than in the pic.  I'd fourth the idea that it is a veronica.

Do you know if the person was confirming an ID of something they received as that, or just looking for a name for something they're growing and somehow came across that name?
Cheers.

Min winter temp -8 or -9°C. Max summer temp 40°C. Thankfully, maybe once or twice a year only.

Had a message today from Gordon who agrees that this plant is Veronica repens. His supplier had mixed the  seed up!

He is still looking for seed of the true Chaenorrhinum origanifolium'Blue Dream' so if you have seed Frans I'll send you his address.  :)

Hi Maggi,

We don't have C. o Blue Dream, but we have had C. o Blue Skies and here is a picture if that's of any help.

Did Gordon say who his seed supplier was? I'm trying to replace Ver. repens which used to flourish here and seeded into the gravel paths but it has been totally gone for 3 or 4 years.
