Arley Hall, Cheshire
« on: July 15, 2011, 09:34:05 AM »
Brian and I  spent the day at Arley Hall yesterday, it is famous for it's wonderful borders of perennials and we were not disappointed.

I haven't named everything just sit back and enjoy an explosion of colour on a warm sunny day.

The Hall is rather striking with that natty English brickwork.

I love to see luxuriant herbaceous borders, not just because of the wealth of colur and texture but also because it makes me very grateful I don't have to do all that work to care for them ;)

The local wildlife is somewhat unusual, Shelagh.... not to say  totally unexpected.... were there warning signs?

No not as such Maggi just a polite request not to sit on their floral rhino.

There was some more local wildlife quietly feeding in the Kitchen Garden.

Keeping the columns of Ilex neat and tidy is obviusly a major job, we just caught them cutting the last one.

Final batch. Including a Chaenorrhinum Blue Skies which was discussed fairly recently and the magnificent 'Cruck Barn' made back in  the 1600's and not a nail used in the original construction.

Not sure that a passing reference to not sitting on Flora's Lino is adequate in terms of current Eflin Safety regs, but there you go.... ::)

The Romneya flowers are perfect!

The barn is terrific... do they use it for events, do you think?
Too much to hope it would be a tea- room... fear of fire, I suppose :-X

Great to see these wonderful borders again, I'm looking forward to re-visiting Wollerton Old Hall whose borders are also very impressive. Thanks Shelagh :D

Thanks Brian we enjoy Wollerton as well but Arley was closer.

Maggi I don't think they use it for events and the Tea Rooms are in the Tudor Barn.

It would make a decent-sized potting shed though. :D

And of course I always knew the quintessential English garden would include a rhinocerus. He's magnificent. Reminds me of those fantastic elephants in London on the Forum some time ago.

What a wonderful day you had Shelagh. :)

Great, Shelagh. That barn is stunning. How nice to be able to choose between that and a Tudor barn to serve teas in!

Yemen, what a country ... Haraz mountains, Socotra, Sana'a, Hadramaut, the empty quarter.... a country of stunning, mind altering beauty...and the friendliest of people.
