Yes, it's nice isn't it, PeterT  ;D
Thanks for helping me out identifying this plant :) so far I'm leaning towards Hippeastrum striatum. What special conditions would give maximum growth and perhaps several flowers per stem? The few other amaryllis bulbs I have are dug half way down in the soil. These bulbs however aren't big enough to keep the plant upright if I planted it the same way. I have both bulbs fully covered with soil and grit on top. One of them has started to grow a new leaf, so maybe it's ok?

Maybe this thread needs to be split, Maggi?  ::)

Hopefully Alberto will know but neither that plant nor the one on PBS match my plant of H. miniatum.  The plant from PBS looks more along the lines of a red form of H. puniceum that is rampant in the Andean regions.

With the help from fellow forumists here in Norway, I think I now have the correct name for my unknown hippeastrum : h. gracilis!  :D Any objections or can this be the one?

Hippeastrum gracilis is used interchangeably with Hippeastrum striatum, the correct name is Hippeastrum striatum.

Aha,they are the same and the correct name is Hippeastrum striatum, thanks! :) Found better pictures for comparison when I googled h.gracilis. This is the one.

Lilli,

Yes, they are indeed the same species, it is appropriate to call your plant H. striatum.

There are multiple clones of H. striatum in cultivation and they all differ, here is a picture of H. striatum from Mauro in Brazil..  Here is a link to his Hippeastrum, look at how many different clones of H. striatum he has photographed, as you can tell there is lots of variation.

Thanks for link, nice plants he's got! Lots of variation yes :o but how does the original one look like?  ::) Mine is perhaps a hybrid of 2 different h. striatum I guess.

Lilli,

  H. striatum is found in many different places in nature and each location has plants with distinct features.  Only one of his plants is a crossing of two species and it is listed as so, the others are all differences that have been found in nature.

   H. striatum has a very large distribution, there is no way Mauro has each clone listed but I can assure you, your plant is indeed Hippeastrum striatum.

Just got a suggestion that it might be a Rhodophiala and not h. striatum. What does the experts say?  ??? Rhodophialas belong to the amaryllis family, and there are some resemblance with the r. araucana....

Lilii

It's not even close to Rhodophiala araucana. This one has flowers about 5-6 or so cm. across and leaves greyish, approx 1cm wide . Check the Rhodophiala threads for pix I have posted under R. elwesii (as I received araucana) in the past.

I grow H. striatum and it appears identical to yours but the colour is redder, not as orange as yours.  Flowers quickly from seed and offsets like mad.

It is H. striatum, there is no doubt.

No where near Rhodophiala

Thank you, you're right. Both the leaves and flower are very different.
