Tropical Plant ID
« on: May 29, 2012, 04:59:23 PM »
Hello all,

Picked this up at a local plant sale as I had not seen this plant before...a previous owner thought it was an orchid but determined that it was otherwise.  Varigated leaves are at most 25 mm wide and maybe 75-100 mm long not including the red stem and thickened basal area.  A common name was thought to be something like "Social Plant" or "Society Plant".  Believed it to have origins in South America.   This specimen needs re-potting badly....anyone familiar with it?

I agree with Davey, Brian.
Ledebouria socialis (syn. Ledebouria violacea, Scilla socialis, Scilla violacea)

It's from South Africa, though, not South America.  :)
