The SRGC 80th Birthday Party

2013 is the 80th anniversary of the Scottish Rock Garden Club. To celebrate, we are holding a birthday party, by invitation, at the Pitlochry Festival Theatre on Sunday June 23rd. The day will include talks by two of the SRGC’s long-standing friends and leading lights, a picnic lunch, time to catch up with friends and chat, with the chance to see the special Explorers Garden. The programme starts at 10:00 a.m. when the reception desk opens and tea and coffee is served. The welcome at 10:45 will be followed by a lecture by Ron McBeath. There will be a picnic lunch at 12 noon (bring your own food), followed by a lecture by our friend Panayoti Kelaidis from Denver Botanic Garden. We will finish with refreshments in the Douglas Pavilion at 3:30 p.m. Pitlochry is a great place to visit, the scenery is spectacular, the welcome is always warm and there are so many things to see and do. So why not come to the party and take the opportunity to make a long weekend of it? You can meet friends, hunt some Scottish alpines and take in some culture by seeing a performance at the Pitlochry Festival Theatre (www.pitlochry.org.uk).
The Scottish Wildlife Trust Reserve at nearby Keltneyburn is a great place (www.scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/reserve/keltneyburn) to see orchids in June. We will arrange a visit there on the Saturday for anyone coming for the weekend. The drive from Glen Lyon to Loch Tay provides the chance to do some roadside botanizing, with Saxifraga oppositifolia and Silene acaulis in flower.
For those wanting to stretch their legs, the 4-hour walk up Ben Vrackie gives access to the flora of this areawith orchids and Loiseleuria procumbens growing at your feet. To top it all, why not visit the famous Cluny Gardens (www.clunyhousegardens.com) to see the amazing primulas.
There is so much to see and do, you can’t help but have a great time. To help us celebrate, two hotels in Pitlochry have agreed to offer a special discounted rate for anyone attending the birthday party. On Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd June, Fishers Hotel (www.fishershotelpitlochry.com) offers DB&B on the Saturday for £54 per person per night and on the Sunday DB&B for £44 per person per night (quote Scottish Rock Garden and give the dates when booking). The Green Park Hotel (www.thegreenpark.co.uk/) offers a 10% reduction on the normal tariff for the 22nd and 23rd June (mention that you are involved in the SRGC weekend when booking to get the reduction).
We hope you will help us celebrate being 80 years young and we look forward to seeing you all in Pitlochry.

Please remember that anyone wishing to attend the party should apply to Mike Kendall, who is managing the requests, for a ticket.
His details are in the Year Book: http://files.srgc.net/localgroups/SRGCSecPages2013.pdf

Hi Maggi,
I'm sorry we aren't able to stay (after the Czech RG Conference) long enough to enjoy the 80th birthday bash! Sounds like it'll be a hoot!
I've noticed on the local groups schedules that there are no meetings between April and August - is this because everyone is too busy in their own gardens to be able to attend a meeting?
cheers

Yes Fermi, it is true most groups don't hold meetings with talks between April and September- some groups do, of course, arrange summer events, such as garden visits - but these are often only made known to local members directly because garden owners don't want wider publicity.

The general theory is that summer  meetings are not popular because folks have so many more demands on their time- (or are swanning off on their holidays!) during the summer months -  but with the difficulties of bad weather and dark nights, it seems that the autumn/winter programmes of evening meetings are less popular in some areas -  many groups will have to give thought to these matters in times to come, I think.   Daytime meetings get over some of the problems - for older members- but are less convenient for working members - it's not an easy path  to tread.  :-\

The SRGC journal, The Rock Garden, will be arriving with members any day now- there is an 80th  anniversary surprise enclosed which is rather fun........... ;)

One of the articles in The Rock Garden is a piece on Roland Edgar Cooper,  who was one of the founding members of the SRGC 80 years ago, written by Alan Elliott.

Alan tells me that as there is a double anniversary with it being 100 years since Cooper's first collecting trip for A.K. Bulley Sikkim; the RBGE, because to the close links with the SRGC, are putting on a small exhibition of Cooper's archive material outside the Library between the 7th May – 26th July 2013.

The exhibition will have Cooper's maps from Bhutan, Sikkim and N.W. India from his collection trips for Bulley between 1913 and 1916, journals, specimens and images etc. on display.

Once you have seen Alan's article I think you will be keen to see the RBGE exhibit.

As the SRGC celebrates its 80th anniversary, we send congratulations to other associations reaching milestone dates!

The  Botanic Garden  of the university of Strasbourg was formed in 1619  and  their Friends' Association celebates its thirtieth anniversary this year.

Its not strictly a SRGC event but it is related.

There is now a wee archival exhibition in the foyer of the Library at RBGE which will run until the end of July.

Its mostly material relating to R.E. Cooper, field images from Sikkkim and Bhutan from the 1913-1915, an amazing map he has annotated his route on, couple of stories about some of his plants and his Lepcha collectors. There are fragments of the Spitfire than came down in the Garden of the East Gate Lodge during WW2 when Cooper lived there, and a map of where to see his living collections in the garden still alive after almost 100 years.

There is also a wee bit about SRGC being 80 and some archival bits relating to David Wilkie who was also a founder of the SRGC. We even found an original of the very first SRGC talk syllabus from 1933 - which is pretty cool.
