You might well be correct. It is not as prickly as the echinus I have in the garden though and a lot lot bigger, though the flowers are smaller on this one too.

May I join with a nice Eryngium in Sierra Nevada? ( Northern part of peak Veleta, 3 400 m)

The wonderful Panayoti Kelaidis has kindly added the following comment to my posting:- Hate to be a pedant, but your Dudleya is D. farinosa. Dudleya cymosa has flatter leaves, bright orange or scarlet flowers and is montane and subalpine (mostly in the Sierra and high coastal range). And it is frost hardy. Your's is the coastal farinosa with more cylindrical leaves, chartreuse tubular flowers and tender to frost.

Cliff Booker replied ... Be a pedant, Panayoti ... many thanks. I wasn't certain whether this was a mixed colony of both species or just two foliage forms of the same species? Now I must away and amend all my other postings in various forums ... damn specialists!!! LOL.

Cliff, when you have time, do post some other pix taken at Point Reyes peninsula, a really drop-dead gorgeous place to visit.  You were so lucky to find sun.  That usually means the wind was pretty strong.

Hi Anne,
Unfortunately the afternoon at beautiful Point Reyes proved the only cool, breezy and very foggy day of our entire trip.  We couldn't see the ocean, the lighthouse, the seals or the dramatic scenery of the area.  Five miles further inland and the sun shone brightly ... at least we saw enough to add a speedy return to our bucket list.

Too bad, Cliff.  Apparently you were there at on a typical day.  We visited on a day that was so windy you had to lean forward to keep from being blown over.  The wind blew the fog away and we had bright sun, saw the sea lions and things like steep hillsides of California poppies plunging down to the ocean.  It was a spectacular day imprinted in my memory forever.
