Candlemas Day snowdrop sale
« on: February 02, 2013, 01:25:11 PM »
Today February 2nd is Candlemas Day the midpoint of winter, between the shortest day and the spring equinox.  What better day for a snowdrop sale in Suffolk from which we have just returned.  Lots of sayings about Candlemas Day and below some pictures:

If Candlemas Day be fair and bright

Winter will have another flight.

If Candlemas Day brings cloud and rain,

Winter is gone and won't come again.

And one for snowdroppers:  Snowdrops are considered to be unlucky if brought into the house before Candlemas Day.

If there are any forumists in the pictures perhaps they can identify themselves?

1.  Before the scrum
2.  Glenchantry stall
3.  Matt Bishop behind stall, Brian Ellis in black hat
4.  Glenchantry again. Lady with grey hair third from left is Olive Mason.
5.  And again from other end.  Art in centre Sue and Wol Staines behind stall

I wonder what Sharon is singing to Matt? ;)   It looks like that, doesn't it?  ;D

Haven't seen Jane Leeds for ages - she was busy  at home with village events when Rod was across at Termonfeckin last year - he's back in Ireland this weekend at Hester Forde's Galanthus Gala. Too long since they were up in Scotland!

To my shame  :-[ I did not know it  was Candlemas  - thanks for the education, David.

To be honest I had forgotten it was Candlemas until we were half way home, my kids used to suffer the rhyme in assembly every year, but they liked to watch the weather to see if it were true.

I'm pleased to say we have had both snow and hail so probably "Winter is gone and won't come again" - hopefully!

It is Groundhog Day over the pond- John W. mentions it...     http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=9910.msg265982#msg265982       and over there, as here, there is no real consensus as to the weather ... http://www.globaltoronto.com/nova+scotias+shubenacadie+sam+sees+shadow+ontarios+wiarton+willie+does+not/6442800918/story.html

Ooh - I can feel the euphoria just looking at the photos.  So come on - who got Glenchantress, Miss Wilmott, Green Tear?  What super things did everyone get?  Wish I was better on the road I would love to have gone but am wealthier for staying home  ;D
