February 2013 in the Northern Hemisphere
« on: February 02, 2013, 10:33:34 PM »
Today we had a lot of rain, but thanks to the few sunny moments I could take some pics in the garden.

Helleborus lividus, the rare endemic helleborus of the Balearic Islands.
Asphodeline lutea - this orange form flowers always very early.
Iris pamphylica
Narcissus hedraeanthus
Iris persica

Lovely Hans, those Iris pamphylica pick up the purplish tones from your rock beautifully.

Really exciting plants Hans - I've never seen anything but the yellow form of Asphodeline, and here too it is summer flowering. Amost seems like it might be another species? The iris is absolutely exquisite and amazing to see growing outside like that - must be just the right environment.

A few plants flowering today.  The Irises, Lady B.S. were planted at the same time, one lot in a bowl kept in the greenhouse and the other  planted in the raised bed.  They both started flowering at the same time despite rain and gales.

Beautiful plants Armin, Tom and Zvone!

Thanks for your comments Gail, John, Armin and Tim.

Armin and Tim I agree with you, I also was very surprised when this plants (seedgrown) flowered the first time so early here while the yellow form I grow will flower in a few months.

David
Not really.  With most of my plants it is benign neglect. After flowering, I put it out in the garden and give it some liquid tomato fertiliser when I remember.
It stays out on the raised bench in its pot all year - including frosts -and I bring it in about early January when I see the buds appear,  When the flowers finish, it goes back out.  Last year I decided to plant its companion plant out on the raised bed - in front of the Irises in the picture,  So far, there is no sign of it, so we will have towait and see if it has survived .  Your climate is not dissimilar to mine as far as rainfall goes so this should work for you.

David - I find Callianthemum kernerianum better in the open garden; it is already showing buds up here in the North East last time I looked; I must check to see of the flowers have opened.
I know two of our local growers have regular disagreements as to whether Callianthemum can be lifted for the shows - the Learned professor lifts them every other year, but Alan Furness does not like to lift them.

Given my climate, which is WET+++++, I'd be worried with one outside
