Ornithogalum season is starting, and again i ask my self why this genus is not popular...
is it because the white flowers are facing up instead of down?...

Ornithogalum sigmoideum from Turkey is an excellent pot plant as it makes large clumps of sessile flower spikes which last for about 3 weeks.

Oron, I love Orithogalum and think they are very under rated and used in our gardens. I have a number of them none of which I have identified as yet - one day I will try.

I like early plants whose flowers face the sky like this, it makes it much easier to see the variation on green bits  with out having to pop them open or turn them over;)

Oron, I believe people don't consider this genus because of the invasivity of O. umbellatum. I do grow some native species which are not offsetting types like O. montanum, excapum, comosum and they make a pretty little show in their pots

I simply think that they aren't in "fashion"
The same "problem" is there for Galtonia and Eucomis
They are impossible to sell here

I think they aren't popular because they only come in white... oh, wait

Most have large flowers for a dwarf bulb and the satiny sheen of the tepals is really fine.

Unfortunately, I know very few Ornithogalum, but the Ornithogalum sigmoideum is wonderful.

I think they aren't popular because they only come in white... oh, wait   

This is SO funny - I wonder if any of the 'drop fiends  are reading this and seeing the joke ?

I  do agree about the long-lasting flowers - and about the special  crystalline sheen that make the flowers so bright.  The quantity of bloom and compact growth is most appealing.

The  'drop fiends are dreaming from the Yellow and Orange colours exist in Ornithogalum dubium and other Ornithogalum species

When seed lists arrive I always check out the ornithogalums offered. Would love to try more. Only a couple of common ones so far.

I agree with you Oron, but I don't really like 'giant' Ornithogalum.
I prefer the small ones, like yours or this ones O. lanceolatum and O. neurostegium

Excellent lanceolatum. Never forms so many flowers with me, but most likely our summers is too short for full development of flowers. It is very good species. Here it forms leaves in autumn and outside they can be damaged in winter, but I never lost it (only request is so high that allways sold out almost to last bulb).

Many of my Ornithogalum are in bloom at the moment, here are O. divergens from Crete and   Ornithogalum cuspidatum,  a rare species distributed from Syria, SE Turkey to Iran and Afghanistan.
This one is originated to the only known location in the Golan Heights [Syria] where it grows in damp conditions in a seasonal stream. Probably first time shown.
