« on: November 25, 2007, 03:35:11 PM »

This one is in flower for the first time. The plant has nice large leaves, but i did not knew it was an Hymenocallis. Any idea regarding the species?

Cheers
Mike

Hi Maggi!

I dont think so  :(... The leaves are much larger and lance-shaped. They get 15 cm per 40 cm in adult plants... But the flowers are very similar!
I will upload some more pictures.

Hi Mike, do you know if this species is evergreen, how is the leaf arrangement, like a rosette or distichous? Do you know where the plant comes from? I am much interested  in Hymenocallis and I grow about 25 species....

Hello Alberto!

Well, i have some bulbs of this plant, and they never lose their leaves totally. The last year's leaves are still alive when the newer ones appear (around ends of summer). The new leaves come all together in a single "flush", and then the plant stops growing untill next year. As far as i know, them seem distichous to me, but i like to put the leaves like a rosette, to maximize the area exposed to the sun  :)

I have no idea of the origin of this plant, because the mother plant is even older than me...
Oh the flowers last a few days and smell (specially at night).
Do you want a better picture of the leaves, Alberto?

Many thanks
Michael

Hi Michael, your Hymenocallis is in the Caribaea Alliance as described by Traub. To identify it I need the lenght of the tube, of the segments and of the cup. I need too the width and lenght of the leaves. May you send me a photo of the particular where the leaves emerge from the bulb? Thank you.
Do you swap a bulb of your Hymenocallis with a bulbs of littoralis?

Hello Alberto!

I have another one with a floral spike coming, i will measure on that one, cause the flowers on this one are starting to fade.

Yes of course we can swap, i have plenty of bulbs. Can you tell me the best time of sending it? Maybe when  the new leaves mature?

Hello Mike, the best time to send bulbs is in spring. I'll wait for the floral details to ID your Hymenocallis.

Hi Alberto!

I had measured the flowers today:

The tube measures 8cm from the top of the ovary to the base of the cup.
The cup measures 3cm.
The tepals 8,5cm.
The anthers measure 6,5cm (excluding the cup they only measure 3,5cm)
The complete style measures 15cm.

I had measured some leaves: 34/37cm length and 8/12cm width. They are not fully mature yet, but are very close.

I will send you a picture of the attachment of the leaves soon. If you need more measures, please tell me as soon as possible, because flowers dont last long.

Thanks
Michael

Hi Michael, looking better at your pictures it looks like the leaves have  a petiole, even if short. Please add a picture of them!

Thank you

Hello!

Here are the rest of the pictures:

About the petiole, most of them have a very short one, but some are attenuate.

Hi Michael, according to the key it should be H. cordifolia, but I have not the original description for the details of the flowers. The key arrives to this species only on the shape of leaf, leaf-blades ovate, cordate at the base, as it looks to be from your pictures. May you check for the original description in Revue Horticole, 1899?

Hi Michail, it is hardier than I thought to identify this species. I watched at a few pictures from Redoute and I think that your plants could fit H. fragrans, depicted from Redoute as Pancratium fragrans.
But sorry I am not sure of it as in the original description of this plants there are not measures of the details.
I wait for spring for  an offset!
