East Lancs AGS Show 23rd March 2013
« on: March 15, 2013, 07:28:03 PM »
Our chums in the East Lancs  AGS group will be busy at the Whitworth Civic Hall  on the 23rd March, while Scots SRGC show lovers will be heading to Kincardine on Forth for the "Stirling" Show on that day.

Great choice of events to attend, eh?

Cliff, one way or another I will be attending for the first time,  :).

Any tips regarding timing , eating, buying, and general show pointers?  Previous reports point towards an excellent event?

You'll find the Lancastrians very nice people Ron. A bit backward but very nice :P ;D

I will be employing a local guide David, to avoid any cultural misunderstandings,  :P ;D

I fully understand what you are saying that their ways are much more primitive than our own, but we can surely forgive them this, given the quality of their cuisine.... e.g. black pudding, hotpot, and cow heels and tripe,  ::) ::)

I know, and for all that they haven't a clue with fish and chips? :(

Indeed that is true. .......... but who does outside of the Whitby - Spurn point coast??
Their cockles are not too bad though.... indeed I may plump for them with a shot of Irish Whiskey if available. Possibly a Nuns Island Distillery.... ??:-X :-*

AGS Show 23 March 2013 CANCELLED
« Reply #6 on: March 22, 2013, 09:43:29 AM »
I've just had a message from Carol Kellett (show secretary and my sister)  to say that the East Lancs show tomorrow is cancelled, due to bad weather forecast.  The M6 in Cumbria and M62 are very snowy and the forecast tomorrow is -1C daytime temperature which will lead to icy conditions.  Please can you pass the message on to anyone you think may need to know?

Now I'm truly depressed :'( :'( Two cancelled shows in 3 weeks. Still the silver lining is I don't have to go out and freeze while cleaning pots.

My commiserations to Carol and her team.

We are devastated that our wonderful East Lancashire AGS Show has had to be cancelled ... the snow is not particularly thick here in Whitworth ... yet ... but the forecast is pretty horrendous and we cannot afford to risk heavy pots being carried across a frozen car park in potentially 2 foot drifts.  Health and safety must be of paramount importance and many of our exhibitors, judges, nurseries and visitors will be travelling long and arduous distances in terrible conditions and we don't want accidents or delays on our conscience.
We consulted Christine McGregor and Ray Drew and we left it as late as possible before making this difficult decision.
We apologise profusely, but snow, ice and blizzards are completely out of our control.

Roll on March 22nd 2014 ... an East Lancs Show in warm sunlight.

This is a terrible disappointment for everyone but, quite rightly, safety is the first consideration.

The weather is like death and taxes - nothing we can do about  any of them.

Oh dear not another AGS show cancelled - not a good start to the year.  I feel sorry for those who have been working hard to prepare plants etc but safety is far more important

It really is, Luc.   While we have concentrated on the disruption and disappointment there are also financial implications to such a cancellation. It is at times like these that the value of insurance can be seen.

The other year we had quite a few local group meetings cancelled because of the weather and there was great concern that this would be something that we had to cope with more often but this year hasn't been too bad- we must just just hope that these two mishaps for the AGS Shows this season become in future just rare footnotes in the story of a strange year in 2013.

We were proved to be fully justified in cancelling the East Lancashire Show.  Whitworth woke this morning to six inches of the white stuff with cars buried under substantial drifts. There were major problems on local roads and blizzards on the cross-Pennine motorways and the car park at the hall would have been completely treacherous.
Apologies once again to all our friends and visitors.
