AGS Show Cleveland March 30 2013

A few shots I took at the show today. Sunny, bright but cool day and the new venue was super - much better for photography that the old one. However, we've been told its due to be demolished in a few weeks' time. Such a shame. School appears to be in superb condition. Show was dominated, as one would expect, by primulas and dionysias and the Farrer went to a Dionysia bryoides grown by Derek Pickford. He had at least 5 more of these beauties exhibited in various sections. I'd be happy with just one...

I think John Dower's miniature garden takes the biscuit for me (the
Anisotome
gets close; if anything would turn people on to umbellifers this would!). It's curious that more people don't show combinations of plants like this - I suppose its the difference between a primadonna and a choir.

Would have had pictures on sooner but getting them down to less than 200 has been rather trying, used to be able to do them as a resize for all at one go but the limit must have been reduced since I last posted. Never mind will put a few up now
Derek Pickard produced a good many Dionysia bryoides, in fact one for every class he good fit one in and I think won each won and carried off the Farrer with one outstanding specimen...even had Ian Kidman drooling
Dionysia bryoides Farrer Medal, but least you think he can only manage D Bryoides also had
Dionysia michauxii and
Dionysia microphylla on display as part of a three pan from Asia the third member being a D bryoides of course

Seems the Dionysia microphylla didn't go so try again
In the B section 6 Sue Flanigan had two Dionysia
Dionysia Monika
Dionysia aretiodes...did have a cultivar name but missed it
There were few Androsace on show but in the small open were
Androsace lehmanniana shown by Brian Burrow and
Androsace lowariensis shown by Lionel Clarkson

A last minute decision to enter the 'small six' by Ian Kidman stood him in good stead as though he was the only entry in the class each plant if exhibited in an idvidual class would have had an excellent chance of a red sticker so I will put up some pics of his entry
Primula 'Joan Hughes'
Primula 'Rosemary'
Saxifraga 'Coolock Gem'
Trillium nivale
Saxifraga 'Allendale Bravo'

To continue with the Kidman 'small 6 the final exhibit was a Galanthus...there were a few on display this year an indicator of the cold spring
Galanthus ikariae
There was a generous display of saxifrage at the show, some in very large pans but I concentrate on the smaller pans as they are easier to photograph on the bench
Saxifraga 'Allendale Noon' from Pamela Anderson, this is a new cultivar to me, colour is a bit different
Saxifraga 'Coolock Kate' Mark Childerhouse
Saxifraga 'Cumulus' from Tommy Anderson...is an older c/v but still one of the best
Saxifraga 'Firebrand' from Don Peace...winner of the most points in the Open Section
