Paris - maybe not a bulb?
« on: May 26, 2013, 05:35:52 PM »
Sorry I cant remember what a Paris grows from.

Several years ago I bought a Paris from Ian Christie. His words were something like - look after it and don't lose it.

Its now spreading fast in my tiny woodland bed. I know where I planted it but cant find the label. Can someone tell me which Paris this is?

Should I be pollinating it?

Paris quadrifolia - they do not always have only four leaves - and it grows from a rhizome- so not a "bulb" for show rules but with a "lumpy underground storage organ" it fits in here  ;)
Yes pollinate it -  it looks like something has been at work already so you may as well finish the job. You might not get seed but it's always worth  a try.

Thanks Maggi. I got seeds last year and just let them lie. No sign of seedlings

Seed of paris quadrifolia and of all other Paris species only produces a small radicle after the first winter. The first leaf (cotyledon) emerges after the second winter.

Not really different mark
I never found interesting forms or shapes
its more the size from them
They all naturalise well and make good seed
probably because of the cross pollination
Many paris are a little boring but intriguing
