p.s. Maggie, ponerorchis tubers are about the size of a peanut and a similar shape, but very very hairy.

All my plants are now up and have made rosettes and whilst this mild weather is helpful it is also good for aphids. A close inspection shows that they hide deep within the rosette and are not visible to a casual inspection. A good time to take precautions.

Back in reply 23 I showed a photo of tubers I had in a pot, in the garden, that were very advanced. Five weeks on they have flower spikes showing at the centre of the leaves. I'm thinking these are possibly tubers I got from med orchids, potted and forgot to label.

Mark did you mean post 32 , not 23 as both have photos in them?  Also could you post another photo of the pot, so we can see what you are talking about.  My opinion is they are not Spiranthes spiralis, the tuber is the wrong shape, see the image of the tubers in the link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiranthes_spiralis.

I'm with Neil on this one; again!  The tubers in reply 23 are not Spiranthes, nor do Spiranthes spikes come from the centre of the new shoot as Mark suggests is happening with his plants.  I suspect that they are very advanced Orchis and although the shoots are visible I would not actually expect them to flower until next spring.  I have flower sheaths visible on several plants which I think will just sit over winter and then flower February-March if we have a mild spell.
My Spiranthes is also just opening.  It feels quite late given that I saw them locally in August and on Majorca in mid-September so it is nice to know other people's plants are in "synch" with mine.  That's quite a rare thing.
