I thought that ants were everywhere too - but we've been here for a very long time and there are no ants. So, yes, it is possible. We've got all sorts of other critters crawling about the place, half of which I have no idea the name of, but no ants.

What no ants? We can send back a few. About 4 years ago the European fire ant made its debut here in the south end of the city. They are positively ferocious aggressors. A month ago I got about 20-30 stings on the lower leg which put me off my feet for several hours with a twitching leg afire. Last Monday they were just under the rim of the compost cart and I got 8 bites on the hand. Are they as aggressive in Europe?
One colony well 160km north of here was said to be one & 1/4 acres.
