The Lost World of Tibet - extract (c.1970)

Major George Sherriff, explorer and legendary plant collector, ran the British Mission in Lhasa from 1943 to 1945 with his wife, Betty. Years later, having returned to Scotland, Betty Sherriff recalls her time in Tibet.
These surviving images from George Sherriff's amateur films, brought to life by Betty's narration, are a recent addition to the BFI National Archive's unrivalled record of Tibet prior to 1950.

Isn't that brilliant and an echo of times past. Something to learn from. I have read books by people like Laurens van de Post  and Wilfred Thesinger and W. H. Hudson about very different places and people but what always comes across is that respect and fascination with other cultures, even when they may be so very different from what we may be used to. Now maybe BBC Scotland might be inspired!

Another wonderful incentive to record as many of the world's top lecturers (and their best talks), whilst we can ... the societies could create an amazing archive for posterity that would be admired and enjoyed for many years.  Imagine if we had recordings of those huge names from the past to loan out to local groups?
