What an inspirational bulb log Ian.
All those photos showing your beautiful garden, just my type of gardening.
The bulbs in the sand bed, are they growing in 100% sharp sand?
And all those snowdrops from just one bulb, amazing.

Mike - yes the sand beds are just rand 30 to 50 cms of pure sharp sand sitting on our free draining sand soil. To date I have not added and kind of feeding.
The increase in the snow drop shows how quickly they can build up if replanted and separated out every year or two. It is noting special just a Galanthus nivalis.

What amazes me is that the snowdrops are still apparently ON TOP OF the Sanguinaria, both species growing well. Ian, is the lower bloodroot still able to thrive and increase while covered with the snowdrop bulbs? If so, it makes a nonsense of my own practice of spacing each plant out with its own place. It also gives me hope that in a future, much smaller garden, I can still grow as many bulby things, even if I have to stack them

The snowdrop bulbs are mostly below the Sanguinaria roots Lesley. This is the depths they prefer Galanthus want to be relatively deep compared to Sanguinaria which grow close to the surface - so both are happy.

But that's what amazes me Ian, that the snowdrops can find their way THROUGH the mass of Sanguinaria. They must be very determined. It highlights and confirms your philosophy as illustrated so well in your DVD talk, that several plants can be successfully gown in EXACTLY the same space. This is great news for those with tiny gardens.
