Galanthus in May 2014
« on: May 04, 2014, 02:20:49 PM »
Well it has been a very slow spring here.  Tubby Merlin started to flower on the 20th of March and today, the 4th of May, it is just as fresh as the day it opened.  I am more impressed with it by the day.

Good to hear - we tubbies are often underestimated, y'know.

Galanthus reginae-olgae (came as corcyrensis, so perhaps from Corfu?). I am delighted to say that I see shoots in my pots of Galanthus second season seedlings, indicating a south facing wall provides a suitable environment for snowdrops in Auckland.

How exciting Anthony.  I hope you will go on to breed a whole line of Auckland friendly snowdrops.  I suppose the Greek species will be most important to you but am sure you can/will get into all sorts of mischief.  ;)

Anthony , I too have been growing G. corcyrensis for nearly 60 years here in Melbourne and find that it and reginae-olgae , r.-o. 'Cambridge' and peshmenii need a sunny ,warm spot to flower freely here . They start flowering in late March and had the last flowers a few days ago.
Already the first winterfl. snowdrops are in bloom here : G. ikariae ssp. snogerupii  ( not a valid name ?) and 'Three Ships' .

I'm looking to increase my snowdrop collection. The corcyrensis gets a good summer baking.
