Only know what I have read- that they have won medals at Gardeneing Scotland and RHS shows and have a national Collection of Agapanthus - I would think/hope they are reliable.

They came to talk to our HPS group in May, and explained that they attend loads of shows during the year.  Talk was a practical one and I learned loads about the genus from it.  No slides just talk and demo.  So I really rate them in terms of knowing about agapanthus.

Their nursery is about 30 minutes drive south from me. Although I've never visited, another local nurseryman I know rates them and I'm sure they would be a reputable supplier.

its seems more attractive to sell the land and build on it - there are a number of nurseries I have frequented over the past 20 years have gone that way - the saddest day was when I turned up at one where I used to know the old guy who owned it.   He had a shed full of old sankey clay pots and some really old long toms - well the son had sold the plot to a builder and they were running the digger over the pots............ I managed to save a couple of hundred but there must have been thousands in that shed.  There are now about 120 houses on the plot.

We purchased a small nursery about 20 years ago - but we don't run it commercially - I would hate to see it with houses on it although it is now in a prime location - I suppose after my day all my buildings will get bulldozed and houses it will be.

they have a Twitter page too : https://twitter.com/GreatAgapanthus
They are working on their display for the Hampton Court Flower Show right now  - I don't know how many staff they may have so perhaps you will have to wait a while for an answer, Hans.

The one tip they gave that I've now implemented was that when I plant them outside, keep them in their pot, but cut the base off first as they flower better when constricted.   I knew the latter part but hadn't thought of leaving them in their pot when planting.

That does sound a good idea Chris - rather like constricting figs and wisteria when you plant them which definitely leads to flowering at the expense of too much vegetative growth. I wonder if this is why daphnes grown in crevice gardens (as in the Czech Republic) flower so well? I have a large mat of D. arbuscula in the garden in a gritty bed with bulbs but it hardly flowers at all. Another reason to make a crevice garden! (Note: why is this discussion under Disappearing Nurseries?).

That's a very good thought Tim, don't know why I'd never thought of it before myself.  My dwarf daphnes don't flower as well as I thought they should.  Shall have to give this a lot more thought in future, anything used to growing in very constricted locations probably flower more to attract more seed production in case they run out of nutrients.  Ain't nature wonderful?

Hampton Court Flower Show has been on all this time, Hans - and perhaps they are now going to Tatton Park Show - if the nursery has few staff it may be very hard to deal with all questions at  such a busy time.

Looks like they are attending a lot of shows this year, details of which are on their website: http://www.somethingforthegarden.co.uk/acatalog/Shows_2010.html

And they are a small, family-run business, so as Maggi says, they're probably rushed of their feet right now.
