Beautiful, Miriam.  Looks like they're very happy at your place.  ;D
Cheers.

Very beautiful, Miriam.

What are the closest relatives of this species? Where does it fall in the overview of the Scorpiris group? Are there forms of this species from high elevations which will bloom later in the year?

We are just about to enter winter, and you already seem to have started spring!

Thank you all :)

Jim,
I. palaestina is very similar to I. planifolia-they both have spiny pollen grains.
It grows in low altitudes in Israel, Lebanon and south Syria and it flowers in Decamber to January.

Here, the sun is always shining 8) ;D...particularly this year as we had very few rain and there is a drought :'(

Sounds similar climatic conditions to here in South Australia except for the 45ml of rain recently - deciding whether I need to dig rhizomes as the soil that might be touching the rhizomes and bulbs is warm and moist.

Thank you Miriam, for sharing the beautyful I. palaestina with us, if I remember
rightly it is about the same colour as the one I flowered some 30 years ago, unfortunately the plants only lasted a few years and then succumbed to virus .
Pat  , we had 125 ml. of rain in the last 2 days , but as it is cool and our soil
naturally very well drained , I am not yet worried about the health of the dormant
bulbs in the open garden.

Wow Miriam, what a fine coloured Iris palaestina!  :o
Sometimes there are doubts if Iris palaestina and Iris planifolia are really two species as the differences between them are very small - but I doubt you ever will find an I. planifolia of this colour.
Thanks for sharing this picture.
