Ponerorchis
« on: December 28, 2014, 06:45:52 PM »
Hello all
I have been searching the internet to find a place to buy Ponerorchis, but can not find any. Do any of you know where to buy this type of orchids.
I think I will give it a try and grow it together with my Pleiones.
I have managed to find one on Ebay, Ponerorchis graminifolia. Only one for sale, and I would like to try a few more species.
From an article that Paul Cumbleton wrote in the Wisley log, he describe Ponerorchis as difficult to grow, but I will take the challenge. If any of you grow Ponerorchis I would be grateful for any advise on culture.

Thank you in advance for any information
Erling

Hallo Erling,
I have the same problem: Would like to buy some Ponerorchis but cannot find a source. Paul Christian (rareplants.co.uk) has some in his shop but they are listed "out of stock". That's curious as they are dormant now and it would be the best time for shipping. I have already emailed him (about two weeks ago) but he didn't reply. Will try to phome him tomorrow.
Best regards - Ulrich

Hello Ulrich

I have this evening found this link to a Dutch dealer. The only problem is, when it comes to paying you can only choose Germany, Luxemburg, France and Austria as delivery address. I have send them an email to hear if it is possible to send to Denmark.

If you are lucky, please inform me of where you found them.

Andrew Bannister at Orchid Alchemy sells Ponerorchis graminifolia on eBay so I assume that is the one which you found.  I have never seen any other Ponerorchis species for sale in the UK.
I have about a dozen plants of four different clones, all sitting dryish in moss at the moment, under the bench in a frost free greenhouse.  When I see signs of growth I stand the pots in water and feed weakly.
One clone is bulking up nicely, the others make a single replacement tuber, so I think that this must be a genetic thing.
Out of stock at Paul Christian very often means that he had them years ago but has not replaced them.  It does mean that his site is a useful reference point as a huge variety of plants are listed, but can be frustrating when you are actually looking to buy things.
Just a thought, two of mine are from Andrew, the others I bought from  Wubben orchids at Peterborough Orchid Show, some time ago, but I am sure that he had them at Malvern this year so it may be worth tracking him down.

Hallo Erling,
yes, some german vendors (Baldur) also sell this mix and I've already tried ordering it. But this was not successful: I received potted plants in early spring but they didn't sprout (? sie trieben nicht aus). The same applied to Habenaria radiata I also ordered. Seems that these sources are not recommendable.
The only Ponerorchis I currently own is from mein-orchideengarten.de. I received it in spring 2013 and it flowered in 2013 and 2014. They write that this is a mix and different variations in color are possible.
I think that vendors being specialised on orchids are more recommendable.
Best regards - Ulrich
BTW: I've also ordered the one being sold at Ebay some days ago.

Fraser Thimble Farms Nursery on Saltspring Island, BC, Canada has Ponerorchis graminifolia listed for sale... not sure of the intricacies of shipping to Europe from there.
Southwestern Nova Scotia,
Zone 6B or above , depending on the year.

Hi Erling,

It might be worth sending an email to Andrew Bannister at Orchid Alchemy to ask for his spring list (sent as a .pdf) as there are is generally much more in his spring and autumn lists than he sells on eBay, and his website does not get updated. The deflasked seedlings of various species I obtained from him the spring have grown well, and there was a nicely spotted form of P. graminfolia amongst them.

I notice that Wubben Orchids also list P. graminfolia at present.

I've been growing mine in a 50:50 mix of perlite and sphagnum (the commercial product Supersphag) which I use for Disas. They are stood in a tray with the Disas in 0.5cm of rainwater during growth, kept drier and cost-free during the winter. My first clone (acquired from Paul Christian several years ago) doubles the number of tubers each year under these conditions.

I have bought them in the past from Jacques Amand. They are lised on the website.

But are unavailable, as is virtually every other orchid on this site!
