Compton Court V S. Arnott
« on: January 22, 2015, 03:51:11 PM »
'Compton Court' V 'S. Arnott'. Do you think they are identical?

Today was the first day I was able to take photos again of the two snowdrops.

Which is which? Don't go by flower size because these are just two randomly picked flowers. One from the group of 'Compton Court' and one from 'S. Arnott'.

I know which is which but do you?

photo 1 = upper flower is flower 2, lower is flower 1
photo 2 = flower 1 on the left and flower 2 on the right
photo 3 = flower 1
photo 4 = flower 2

editing to add - I forgot to tell you flower 1 is S. Arnott and flower 2 is Compton Court

I will now go and measure the ovaries but the difference may be down to the angle of the photo

Mark  - The mark on the well-documented 'Compton Court' here is more rounded, an inverted U-shape, than those you show.  I can get a better picture if you need it, this was from a few days ago.  It always flowers just after the reginae-olgaes and months before S. Arnott.

They flower together here

One ovary is larger than the other but that's due to flower size. The largest has a larger ovary 11mm top to bottom. The smaller flower is 9mm top to bottom. These flowers were chosen randomly from each group

John, I did not know that Compton Court flowers earlier then S.Arnott. My Compton Court is just up, and far way from flowering.

Mark, thank you for checking the ovary's. It seems there is no difference at all then.... Or it must be that John has a different one as we have. As his flowers much earlier.

Under glass it notably surfaces just after the r-o's.  Our flowering times don't follow normal patterns for whatever reason.  All seem later than usual this year - under glass that is.

Mark just had a look at older pix and it seems that its mark is variable and has in some years matched yours.  As here where it looks like yours:

How much earlier?

I think I'll move both to the warmer front garden and put a couple of each in the same pot and grow them in the green house

Not the best two snowdrops to compare! Tony if they were more colourful, had stripes and spots and a beautiful red stigma then they would have a following all around the world ;) Croconut or galanthophile :-\ I remember a wonderful visit to Chris Brickell's garden which brought together both of these plants-people, and when you see these plants together in the garden along with Cyclamen coum, Iris reticulata and hellebores there is something magical which a lot more gardeners might pick up on :D

I'm with Tim, what better sight in the new year than a mixed planting of 'drops, Cyclamen and Eranthis under a witch hazel perhaps?

Even better when you see them in the wild although the iris would be missing-Lake Abant.
