One day after  the 142nd anniversary of the birth of the great plant hunter George Forrest, there's another chance to win  the premier SRGC plant award  which was named to honour him - the " George Forrest Memorial Medal"  for the most meritorious plant in the show" at the joint SRGC/AGS Kendal Show.

Well ! I'm sure George Forrest would have been pleased to see the plant winning "his" medal today at the Kendal show  - it was this cracking potful of sunshine -  Dionysia ( I reckon D. aretiodes?)  shown by  Frank and Barbara Hoyle  and photographed by Alan Gardner.



Many congratulations to the Hoyles - who won a Farrer last year at Kendal with a fine Cyclamen 

 If this is indicative of the plants on the benches, Show Secretary  Alan Oatway  and his Team will be feeling very pleased this evening!

Well, just got back, 260 mile round trip. Images will take some time. Lots of lovely plants, lots of people standing around talking so you could not get to see them, even more stood in doorways blocking the entrances. And as usual a venue with totally inadequate parking and no one to point out where there might be other places to leave the car.
I can see us not bothering going again!

Alan G. tells me that  " Kendal was a little quieter this year with fewer outstanding plants but still a great show. Cyril showed an outstanding Fritillaria gibbosa."

some quick snaps of the main award winners. The Forrest medal went to  Frank and Barbara Hoyle as did a merit cert for the cyclamen which I think was the plant that won the top award a  year ago. Don Peace had the trophy for most points and the AGS medal for 6 small pots. Tommy Anderson took the AGS medal for 6 larger pots one of which won a merit cert. as well

Cyril's  Frit took the best plant in a 19 cm pot, Ivor Betteridge's cyclamen  was best foliage plant, Ian Kidman had a merit cert in this three pan , Bob Worsley took the award for most points in section 2, the SRGC bronze medal and his Cyclamen libanoticum received the new award for the best bulb in sections 2/3 in memory of the late David  Mowle. Dave Morris had most points in section 3.

The Hoyles  were competing against themselves for the \Medal with a  Cyclamen pseudibericum full of flowers.

 A well deserved gold medal went to the display  on Lakeland wild orchids  set up by Ann Kitchen. The photo does not do it justice, There were lots of photos on display as well as the competitive classes. Rannveig Wallis had an intriguing  set titled plants macabre with human body parts photoshopped into the flowers.

The macabre photos were taken (and manipulated  ) by Jon Evans.  The reference on the caption to Rannveig Wallis was that it was her plant.

Thanks  for the extra info Diane. There were lots of excellent photos in the competitive section and I am posting  only a small selection to give some idea of what was on display. The quality of the originals  was far superior to these snaps. They included plants  in the wild and cultivation as well as monochrome and digitally manipulated images.
