New Zealand wild plant atlas?
« on: March 11, 2015, 11:36:20 AM »
I'm travelling next week to NZ and am particularly interest in taking photographs of any of the following species in the wild or in botanical gardens (seed would also be nice) - yes, I know it's not the perfect time of the year.
Sonchus kirkii (Native puwha); Lepidium oleraceum (Cook’s Scurvy Grass/ nau), Taraxacum magellanicum (Native dandelion/tohetake), Cardamine debilis (NZ bittercress/panapana), Urtica incisa (Dwarf bush nettle / ongaonga), Geranium solanderi (Matuakumara), Microseris scapigera (Native scorzonera)

Is there maybe an on-line atlas that would be useful for finding my target plants?

We'll be a few days near to Auckland and then will be doing a circuit of South Island from Christchurch - Dunedin - Riverton and west coast to Nelson (I'm speaking at the Heritage Harvest Festival, Riverton on 28th between 1:45 and 4:45) and maybe also in Raglan and Christchurch.

Appreciate any suggestions...

Try the Dunedin Botanic Gardens Stephen . They have had a few of those species growing there in the past . The DBG  botanist (Tom) has a complete list of plantings and could help you out .

There is plenty of puha around Riverton and I'm sure Robert Guyton will point you in the right direction

The weather is still nice here so enjoy your trip

Cheers

Hello Stephen,

You have picked a suite of plants that most people don't bother about; The first five are from my own observations
Sonchus kirkii (Native puwha) Otago Peninsula not common; also near Riverton
Lepidium oleraceum (Cook’s Scurvy Grass/ nau) Aramoana, near Dunedin. (this is not common)
Taraxacum magellanicum (Native dandelion/tohetake), Fraser Basin, Old Man Range,
Cardamine debilis (NZ bittercress/panapana), Otago Peninsula  common in forest remnants
Urtica incisa (Dwarf bush nettle / ongaonga), Otago Peninsula common in forest remnants( as is it big brother Urtica ferox)
Geranium solanderi (Matuakumara), You are in luck here: it has been recorded from Howells Point rocks, Riverton
Microseris scapigera (Native scorzonera) scattered locations South Island high country ( also in the North Island)

good luck
