Just look at this Cyclamen pseudibericum that gained the Farrer Medal at the East Lancashire AGS show today for Frank & Barbara Hoyle. What a giant, what a gem, what a startling achievement!!! Congratulations to this prolific couple.

How DARE you, Mr Gilgemyn!!!  If I had a solicitor, then you would surely hear from him in a week or so.

Two more images of the tremendous cyclamen … and, the amazing Dionysia that shines out in the second image is also one of Frank and Barbara's amazing stable of plants. Other equally impressive yellow Hoyle spheres appeared in several classes.

As the last post says, the plants could have swapped awards from Kendal, I suspect may yet been seen in Hexham next week as well as the weather forecast is not promising warm weather by the looks of it.....good for holding plants in good condition for a bit longer but not so good for bringing stuff on.
Got a few shots from East Lancs, tried to avoid repetition from the Kendal show as quite a few exhibits had held over to yesterday. I have to admit that getting up at 4-30AM is getting to be a strain on my  showing energy but we had a good drive both ways with little traffic problems though miles and miles of road works and speed limits.
Random shots of what caught my eye, no particular order
Saxifraga georgei from Tony Stanley in 67, was so good it won a Certificate of Merit (C of M)
Dionysia bryoides from Derek Pickard (79), one of a few he had on the bench
Narcissus heinriquesii (75) Les Brown (think I have the name right)
Asarum campaniforme Wilma and Jim Wright, is one of these plants that you have to pick up and look up into the flowers to appreciate

I said I would try to avoid repetition from last week but
Fritillaria alburyana from Geoff Rollinson (73) was probably in better form this week and at any rate is worth another picture
Fritillaria aurea from Alan Spenceley (73), good to see him back on the circuit after being ill
Arcterica nana 'Redshanks' from Tim Lever (83)
Cyclamen alpinum leucanthum from Vic Aspland (59)
Hepatica from Lionel Clarkson (65), sorry I missed the name

Class 53, for Asiatic primula had a decent entry so the winner was
Primula henrici from Peter Hood
Primula nana alba from Don Peace and my own
Primula bracteosa were among the other exhibits in the class
Other Asiatic Primula at the show included
Primula 'Netta Dennis' from Ian Kidman (57)
Primula 'Arduaine' (5), again from Don Peace

Don Peace won the Most Points in the Open Section, another of his entries was
Saxifraga opposoitifolia (81)...he had several of these at the show, for me some looked like hybrids more than the true S oppositifolia so I wondered about them being shown in class from a continent but no one seemed to have an opinion otherwise. Really nice plants none the less.

Another saxifrage
Saxifraga 'Tycho Brahe' (19) from Lionel Clarkson more thanheld its head up against the more recent cultivars
Dionysia 'Ludwig Jahn' (66) Ian Kidman I felt was hard done by in only a second sticker
Primula allionii 'Eureka' from Frank and Barbara Hoyle was a fine specimen of a plant I find not too easy to get to a modest size

Corydalis maracandica (16) from Don Peace and I assume from the same part of the word
Iris maracandica (21) from Ivor Betteridge

Iris nusairiensis (22) earned a C of M) for Peter Bland, for me it is not true I nusairiensis as too tall and vigorous so my feeling is a hybrid but again no comments were made and it still is a nice plant

It is not often that a non flowering plant had many envious eyes cast in its direction but
Celmisia philocremna (89) from Ian Leslie had many covetous eyes cast upon it. This was a seed raised plant from his own seed, he said that his original few plants had died so he sowed the topsoil/gravel from the pans and he had three germinations, all of which he is still growing on, this one being the best
Cyclamen persicum (high Altitude Form) (100) was the best plant in the B section, winning the Merlewood trophy for Steve Walters

That's my all folks, was a brief encounter for what was a very nice show, good range of quality plants on the bench, good parking, lovely sunny day if a bit cool, plenty folk to have a blether to, nice post lunch dose in the car to catch up on some lost sleep....roll on Hexham next week, only 10 miles away

Another highly successful East Lancashire AGS Show on Saturday 21st March. Congratulations to Show Secretary, Carol Kellett and her amazing team of helpers, who ensured the day ran so smoothly and continued the friendly atmosphere for which this show is rightly known.
Many thanks to the main Society, to the exhibitors, the nurseries, the judges, the show reporters and photographers, the wonderful helpers and stewards and all our visitors … we hope you all had a magnificent day.
